Although previous posts about the year ahead note positive developments, the psychic pictograph "2018" captures what's falling apart. The overall design signals "break-up", lack of unity, and loss of power, including economic power ( first posted on my blog in mid-December 2017.)
The pictograph's words: “discrete parts”, “no sharing”, and “adrift” might describe the divisiveness, unfriendly policies, and loss of identity many citizens around the world experience in 2018. I think this pictograph particularly applies to the U.S. My alarm about this starkly blunt assessment of the year is: there are no pictograph words signaling the resistance rides in to save our democracy. Perhaps the pictograph portrays the whole of 2018 will still feel chaotic no matter what 2019 might bring. Otherwise, it's saying American democracy becomes dis-empowered this year, and resistance isn’t united enough or strong enough to show up in a symbol. We won't know until there's an immigration policy and the midterms. I also got the feeling people wouldn't expect to be where we are at the end of 2018...I hope it's a surprise to the upside!
“Discrete parts” as a political tactic, where things are done in parts: it's being used on the Dreamers today, with their fate not part of the deal, to be dealt with later. The Dreamers are pretty much doomed without being included today. It's a tactic being used all over the country to destroy Nature itself, where new policies are allowing the land to be carved up by companies into discrete parts, the prelude to lifting environmental protections.
“Discrete parts” suggests no bi-partisanship. A national identity breaks up in the minds of Americans. As a warning, the words point to the importance of being able to unite: if either you personally or your team can’t get anywhere better this year, the culprit is lack of unity.
“No sharing”: Official policies reflect that people are not their brother’s keeper. It also suggests that lack of empathy can come from shock, and being overwhelmed by the hard time and suffering the “no sharing” policies visibly create, and that many just avoid looking at what’s happening.
Adrift: The national identity can change profoundly this year. It may not seem like it today, but a lot is riding on what happens with the Dreamers. The late prophet Baba Vanga who died in 1998, famously predicted that a black man would become the 44th President of the United States at the time of a spectacular economic crisis. She also predicted that despite high hopes, at the end of his term America would be in bad shape and divided “between North and South”, and that the 45th president would be the last. Although just because one part of a prediction is right doesn't mean the next part is, could she have seen the 45th president and the current fight for the very soul of America. She could be seeing that America loses its democracy. “Get to Work” is the phrase of the year: we'll have to fight for democracy with our vote.
